Can you imagine this child going to bed in a tent, afraid of marauding tigers? That's what's happening in Nepal right now to so many. The tigers are hungry and they prowl at night.
I learned this from a friend who knows people in Nepal. It brought the situation alive to me in ways no newscast or report could. I think many of us are overwhelmed by news stories, by tragedies, by natural disasters, cruelty, torture, murder, injustice - so much so, that we just shut down.
But hearing of a family whose home disappeared in the earthquakes, and who must live in a makeshift tent, from someone who knows them made it all so real.
I go to bed in comfort. I adjust the thermostat if it's too hot or too cold. I know the walls will keep me safe. I simply can't imagine sleeping with the threat of a hungry tiger outside, especially not if I had small children who relied on me for protection.
I love tigers, their beauty and strength; but no way would I want to encounter one that wanted to eat me. My cat recently scratched me, raked its claws down may arm. It was nothing, but I bled profusely. It hurt; he's a big cat. But he was no threat to me at all. Had he been a tiger, with no ties of affection to me, and no food in his belly, I would not have stood a chance.
I'm not sure of my point, other than to say I'm glad there are so many relief efforts underway, and that people are being so generous. I hope they reach this family in time.
